VIDMICShoulder Mic Camera Records All

Officers in Paradise, Calif., have a new tool in their uniform arsenal. Shoulder microphones that also can record sound and video are expected to help officers close cases more quickly while providing an unbiased record of all police interactions. Because the cameras are attached to the officer, they provide a better record of events than dashboard-mounted versions.

As Summer Draws to a Close...

I look forward every year to meeting up with many of my customers at the annual ASIS International Seminar and Exhibits. It's always an opportunity to renew old friendships and to meet new people all in the service of the country we love and want to protect. I will be sponsoring the Tuesday morning breakfast for NASCO -- the National Association for Security Companies. If you'd like to learn more about how this national organization can help you grow your business, drop me an e-mail or give me a call today and I will send you some background material. If you'd like to meet with me during ASIS, drop me a line and we will set a time to discuss your uniform needs.

It seems everywhere I look lately, I am reminded of the industry we all share. In everything from the security cameras at the local store parking lot to the security measures at both political conventions, I see those who are serving to protect others. Of course being the president of Unitex Direct, I also look with an eye to their uniforms (or lack thereof) and the image they convey just by what they wear. It is impressive that, in an arena filled with guys in suits, you can still pick out the Secret Service officers. These men and women are challenged with security on a national and international scale, and they face some serious concerns in the process. Check out our first "Industry Updates" article for more on that.

We also are featuring an excellent vendor company that I am proud to promote. Kuty & Associates, LLC works wonders for many private security companies because they focus on our industry. They are experts at marketing, recruitment, mentoring and analysis to grow your business. If you're looking to increase your market share or service offerings, this may be the perfect place to start. Read more below in the "Vendor Showcase."

On the uniform front, we've got two products to present. The first by Liberty Uniform is an innovation on one of their primary products. It's a new security trouser that offers two cargo pockets – with flap and hidden zipper with room for storing all of the essentials. The second item, by 5.11 Tactical, helps us as the days get shorter and the cooler weather moves in. We certainly notice the difference in temperature up here in Michigan already. So this is a perfect time to assess your fall uniform needs. Check out the 5.11 Response Jacket – perfect for those dipping temperatures while still looking sharp! We have lots of other products ready to complement your uniform program. Just give us a call and Unitex Direct will help fill in the gaps to keep your officers prepared and comfortable.

U.S. Secret ServiceSecret Service Faces Difficult Convention Tasks

The Republican National Convention is currently topping off a month of near-non-stop action for the Secret Service. Officers provided overseas protection of dignitaries at the Olympic games followed quickly by the Democratic National Convention, and just three days later face providing security for the Republican convention. Each of those tasks posed their own internal challenges as well – everything from language barriers to open-air venues to the logistics of moving thousands of Secret Service officers to each location. The $20 million budget hasn't made matters any easier on this month-long security marathon. Read more about the ongoing measures of the Secret Service in this election year.

TexasTexas School District Permits Guns, Sparks Debate

Officials at one Texas school district drew attention a month ago when they changed the policy to allowed teachers with a state gun permit and district permission to carry guns on school campuses. The district reasoned that the closest law officers are 30 minutes away, and they wanted to provide protection to students in a more timely fashion. But other groups are questioning the legality of the policy, claiming state law prohibits guns on school campuses by anyone other than a commissioned peace officer. Keep an eye on Harrold School District as it may be a turning point in campus security.
