SneezeSkip the Sickness at Work this Season

As your office mate sniffles for the 50th time in two minutes and reaches for yet another tissue, you're saying a silent prayer that the sickness creeping through the office skips over you this year. You can't afford to be sick – there's a stack of reports that need to be reviewed, you're in charge of the entire building's security, not to mention all the home and family obligations on your plate. So you keep your head down and avoid contact. But there's more you can do to avoid getting sick from co-workers this flu season.

First, it's important to understand that cold weather outside means dry warm air inside. Heated air dries out the mucus in our noses and throats that usually filters out these bad bugs, giving easier access for the germs to get inside. Second, with this challenging economy and employees not wanting to appear expendable, people are coming to work sick more often and spreading their germs to others. This only compounds the problem.

So how do you avoid coming down with a cold or flu this season? The best defense is cleanliness. Wash your hands often, scrubbing for at least 15 seconds with warm water and soap. Try washing your hands at least once an hour. And in between times, don't touch your hands to your face to rub your eyes or nose or to scratch an itch. Take a multi-vitamin (studies are inconclusive whether vitamin C or any herbals really work) and get some good sleep. A well-rested, well-fed, and well-cleansed body will be able to fight infection much better than a worn down, dirty one.

from the president
Dan MendelsonNovember is here and cold weather is making its way across many parts of the country. However it's warm at the hearth where family and friends gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving. I hope that across the country your special plans to celebrate Thanksgiving will bring you closer to your family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Company We Keep PDFSpeaking about family, here at Unitex Direct, all of our customers know that we treat them like family and we've put together a new message about our company which I wanted to share with you. Our message called, "The Company We Keep" will be mailed out to all of our current customers soon but for those of you who are not currently using our services you can download the PDF here. If you are not currently a customer I invite you to become one and experience the care and consideration that we give to EVERY order that crosses our desks. Inside our message you'll read a brief interview from several customers across the country as they talk about their businesses, their goals and their operations. They also talk about the Unitex Direct experience. If your uniform vendor isn't treating you like family, it's time to call us at Unitex Direct and experience the difference.

With cold air moving in, it's time to start thinking about keeping your officers warm this winter season. Here at Unitex Direct, we advocate layering for warmth and comfort. It's the best way to be covered when duty may call you out into the cold and then back indoors multiple times during the same shift. The topmost layer can be from our great selection of OUTERWEAR which is one of our featured product areas this month. Click on OUTERWEAR and see a variety products that can fill this requirement from as low as $47.99 to more than $200 for some high end specialty products from 5.11 Tactical and others.

You also want to keep your fingers warm and we have a special on a Thinsulate™ lined leather dress glove priced at $19.99. Quantity discounts are available starting at 12 pieces. If you print the convenient PDF on the gloves you will have a handy sizing tool for measuring your hand and knowing what size glove to order. FREE SHIPPING on 24 pair or more!

Finally, I am currently in California attending the CALSAGA Annual Conference I've been looking forward to. It is so nice to travel the nation and have a chance to visit with our customers! Whether it's at a convention, an informative seminar, or even a personal office visit, I always look forward to meeting our customers face to face. I am often energized after these meetings with new ideas and projects to improve our levels of service to our great customers. I hope this newsletter serves the purpose of keeping us all connected in the time between personal visits!

Mall SecurityMalls and Retailers Urged to Prepare for Potential Shootings

The National Retail Federation and the International Council of Shopping Centers are thinking ahead to holiday shopping already. Together, they have released updated guidelines to help retailers plan for the possibility of a shooting incident at their locations. In the past four years, there have been 17 mall shootings leaving 34 people dead. A little prevention, as recommended by the NRF and ICSC will go a long way in protecting your officers and clients in an emergency situation.

Domestic ViolenceDomestic Violence Victims Often See the Workplace as Safe Haven

For the thousands of women suffering silently from domestic violence, the workplace may be their only refuge and safe environment. Their partners at home may be performing unspeakable acts on them regularly, and their time with coworkers is their only time not spent worrying for their own safety. But it's important for those in the workplace to react in a helpful manner when domestic violence is suspected. There are even legal matters to consider when an employer knows or suspects a employee is a victim of domestic violence. Read more about how best to manage this tragic and all-too-common occurrence here.

TSATSA Assumes Secure Flight List Checking Duties

The Department of Homeland Security has assigned the TSA the duty of checking airline passenger lists against the nationally held watch list starting in early 2009. This was one of the key recommendations of the 9/11 Commission in order to ensure that the comparing of the lists is handled consistently across all airlines.

The matching of the watch list to passengers has been left to individual airlines until now, a practice that meant the government had to share its watch lists with multiple sources and left the matching process open to airline interpretation. By bringing the matching process under the TSA, it is hoped the watch list will be more secure and will flag fewer misidentified flight threats, and airlines will only pass passenger name, date of birth and gender to the TSA for review.

Atlanta PDAtlanta PD Sued for Violation of Privacy over Candidate Blood Test

In a lawsuit that has public safety officers and employers choosing sides, a candidate for a position of police officer with the Atlanta PD is suing the department claiming he was denied the position after a blood test revealed he was HIV-positive. On one side of the issue, federal law prohibits discrimination against those with disabilities, and HIV/AIDS is listed under that category. On the other hand, due to the nature of police work, the possibility exists that duty work might lead to a transfer of blood or body fluids.

This case is sparking debate among police departments and security agencies across the country. This is a good reminder to review your own company's hiring policies that should be carefully spelled out and reviewed by a lawyer before being enacted equally with all candidates.

CUSTOMER PROFILE

C & D SecurityC&D Security
Troy Thames,
Executive Vice President

C&D Security has been a customer of Unitex Direct for more than 10 years. In January, it will be celebrating 50 continuous years in the security business. The "C" and "D" in C&D Security, stand for the company's original owners--the Creamers and the Derringtons. The four original partners have since retired, but the Derrington family still owns and controls the organization. C&D Security employs about 750 officers across the country.

1) How did C&D Security come to focus on the states where it has operations?
We go where the business is. Those states are where we have our government contracts or other contract customers. Our headquarters are in Colorado Springs, and we first went out of state in 1993 and expanded since then. Right now we are working in Colorado, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Massachustetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, and we're just getting ready to add California.

2) About half of C&D Security's business comes from government clients. Can you tell us how you have come to get so much government contract work?
They are competitively bid, and since it's federal we're talking national scope for competition. So you start developing areas of expertise. We've got a very good reputation with the treasury, IRS, Homeland Security and GSA. We're cleared "top secret," and we're working both cleared and non-cleared sites for the Air Force, Army and Navy. Those agencies are where we are really well known.

3) What do you find most important when retaining your officers?
Turnover is most directly tied to compensation. The federal projects we do put us in the top 10 percent for compensation, which lowers our turnover automatically. The national average turnover for the security industry is over 200 percent annually. For the last five years, we've been below 40 percent, and most of that turnover has been in our lower-paying commercial work – retail stores, construction companies, that kind of thing. We usually run less than 5 or 10 percent in our federal work.
C&D takes care of the employee, the employee takes care of our client, and in turn our client will take care of C&D in the form of return business. Our emphasis is getting good employees and taking care of them, and part of that is paying them well. Just in the last quarter I have give out three certificates to employees who have been with us for 25 years.

4) With election day behind us, does a change in president have any impact on your business or industry?
The only change might be in regulatory changes. For example there is a lot of talk about mandatory health care, and that will affect operations. Some states where we are require health insurance right now. But as far as which political party is in charge doesn't really affect us. Our industry is one of the few that is mostly immune from recession. People always need security, and in some cases the need may even go up.

5) Tell us a little about your impression of Unitex Direct from your 10+ years working with them.
They work with us and for us. It's personalized. They know us by name and we know they are going to take care of us. One of my subordinates a few years ago tried to go with another company without my knowledge, and we had a shipment that included 20 XL coats, but they didn't have them in stock so instead of telling us or backordering them, they just shipped along 20 large coats. That doesn't work, they just don't fit. So that's when I asked why we were using someone different anyway – that wouldn't happen with Unitex Direct. They would have had it in stock or would have helped us make alternate arrangements. They know our needs and they track everything. They know that in New England I need white shirts, Philadelphia I need grey shirts, and in New Mexico I need brown shirts. I don't have to tell them that, I just tell them I need 10 shirts in New England, and they get the right order to the right location. When we need them, they are there for us.
