BUSINESS
MANAGEMENT tip |
At the turn of the year, business resolutions are almost as common as personal ones. And both are equally broken by February because a few key steps are skipped. As you review your company policies, finances and performance with an eye to the future, keep the following pointers in mind for a truly successful goal-making session.
Set measurable goals.
Instead of saying you want to improve your customer base, for example, determine a number of new customers you will add throughout the year. Mark specific goals for improvement.
Write it down and share it.
Your company is made up of more than one person, and it will take more than just you to accomplish your business goals. So it's important to document the specific goals you have set and share those with every employee so they see how they are a part of the progress.
Break it into smaller goals.
One big goal can be broken into smaller checkpoints along the way so you can measure your progress throughout the year. Think of those giant thermometers used for fundraisers and how they show progress. Create some way to measure your smaller steps each week or month toward your year-long goals.
Identify help.
Whatever your resolution is, there is someone else out there who has faced the same struggle. Seek out the information, resources, people and programs that will help you reach those goals. It may be an Internet site, a book, or an inspiring person you admire who can help motivate you!

Happy New Year to all of our current and future Unitex Direct customers! This is an excellent opportunity to make a few business resolutions and set some concrete goals for the coming year. To help out, I've included a few helpful tips in the "Business Management" section below. These are some simple goal-setting rules that may help your company have the best year yet!
One of your goals for 2009 may be to create a new look for your officers and employees. If so, or if you are just interested in adding a few new components, I am ready to help you personally with your choices. You can make a significant improvement in how your officers are perceived just by making a small change in your uniforms. You can start with something as easy as an embroidered logo on your uniform shirts or give your employees a gift of an off duty shirt with your company logo applied.
Recently two offices of the US Border Patrol contacted us to help provide some of their support staff with logoed apparel. The Peer Support program provided us with a photo of their new metal badge and we converted it into a sewn logo for their shirt. We did the same for the Chaplaincy program at USBP. Both teams were very pleased with the results of our work and wear their new apparel proudly. |

industry updates |
This past year saw a marked decline in the number of police officer deaths in the line of duty compared to 2007. The number of officers killed by gunfire reached a 50-year low. Though final numbers have yet to be officially tallied for the year, the 2008 total of 140 officers killed is 23 percent lower than the 181 officers killed in 2007. The leading cause of deaths in the line of duty was from traffic incidents. And the number of female officers killed tied the all-time high of 15 in 2002.
Security industry professionals attribute the drop in duty fatalities on a number of possible factors including increased training, heightened alertness on behalf of officers and the public, the use of less deadly weapons like tasers (which officers are more likely to use at the first sign of potential harm), and an increase in the use of bullet-proof body armor. Read more about the statistics from 2008 in this article...

Weeks ahead of schedule, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reached its goal of hiring 6,000 new border patrol agents by the end of 2008. The additional officers bring the total employed by the agency to approximately 18,000. President George W. Bush set the hiring goal in May 2006, increasing the size of the department by 50 percent. It was a lofty goal, and the CBP faced some struggles at times trying to reach out to a new pool of potential agents.
In this newsletter, we've highlighted a few of the tactics used by the CBP including sponsoring a Nascar racecar, partnering with Professional Bull Riders Inc., creating a dedicated recruitment website, and other unique approaches to reaching out to the public. These tactics may be adapted to your own company as you seek candidates for your officer positions.

Last week was the first episode of the "Homeland Security U.S.A." reality show on ABC. It's a close look into the odd encounters and safety threats many of our customers handle every day in their security professions. The show films on-location as agents of various arms of the Department of Homeland Security (TSA, Coast Guard, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and others) perform their daily duties protecting our borders and citizens. While the show doesn't deal with the controversies surrounding policies and procedures, it is an excellent documentary-style program that gives ordinary Americans an idea of what our security officers face every day.
We'd love to hear your impression of the show! to tell us what you thought of the first few episodes (scheduled for Tuesdays at 8/7c). Is it showing the security profession in a positive way? Are the stories ones you can relate to? How will the show change the public's opinion of our nation's frontline officers? Email our newsletter editor, and we may share your reaction in an upcoming issue.

When a TV news report announced that Phoenix police were buying their own firearms due to budget shortages, the right person was listening. Actor David Spade stepped in with a $100,000 donation to the police department. Spade grew up in Arizona and graduated from Arizona State University. His donation will be used to purchase about 50 rifles for police officer use. This struggle with budget cuts and reduced equipment has been hitting police departments across the country. Phoenix found its solution in a famous actor – you may find your solution just by calling Unitex Direct for the best prices on your uniform needs.
