Handcuffs
On Feb. 4, 1974,

Patricia Hearst, granddaughter of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped from her Berkeley, California, apartment. She was 19 at the time she was taken by members of an urban guerrilla group called the Symbionese Liberation Army. The SLA demanded release of a jailed member, but when that was denied, they demanded the Hearst family donate $400 million to hungry Californians. After the family made a $6 million donation in food, the captors refused to release Patty. She would eventually join her captor's mission and openly assist them in a bank robbery that landed her in prison. It's unclear whether Patty Hearst was brainwashed into helping the SLA or she joined them feely, but her 35-year sentence was commuted by President Carter after just two years in prison.

On Feb. 4, 1997,
a civil jury found O.J. Simpson liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, awarding $8.5 million in damages to the Goldman family. A few days later, the jury raised the penalty by another $25 million set to go to the Brown family. O.J. Simpson had been found not guilty in the criminal trial a year and a half earlier. Oddly enough, both Patty Hearst and O.J. Simpson counted F. Lee Bailey among their criminal defense lawyers.

from the president

It's amazing that just two weeks ago our nation watched the swearing in of our 44th president. I am sure many of you watched the inauguration paying close attention to the security presence. It is a testament to our nation's top security teams that they could handle the nearly 2 million people with such grace and honor. It makes me proud to think that some uniforms from Unitex Direct may have been worn that day. We all believe it is rewarding to be a small part of the work that our customers do every day.

As the new year gets rolling, you may be looking to network with those who can help you grow your business. If so, I recommend becoming active in NASCO, the National Association of Security Companies. I've been a member for three years, and I find a lot of value in the organization. NASCO is an advocate for the contract security industry on issues such as standards and regulations, government oversight, and opening new markets for private security. You can be a part of these discussions and provide input that is taken to federal, congressional and state decision makers. And at the same time, you can grow your business by networking with others in the security industry and sharing experiences.

This month, in New York City, NASCO will hold a general meeting for the CEOs, presidents and others of some of the top private security companies in America including Allied Barton, SecurAmerica, Securitas and G4S Wackenhut. Company leaders will come together to discuss the agenda for the coming year. This is a prime chance to voice your concerns to those who can help make a difference.

Finally, we have two great product offers this month. We are continuing our boot offer below but we're also featuring a rainwear offer this month only. Our customers tell us that rainwear is most heavily used in February and May. So, to help out in this economy we are putting our most popular rain coat on SALE this month. All sizes of our yellow or black raincoat from Small – 4X are one price with no oversize charges! For an extra $2 you can get your choice of many stock titles printed on the back of the coat. For a small one-time art charge, we can even create custom artwork with your logo and company name so that your officers can be directly identified while on duty. Call us today to order your stock or custom rainwear.

Our 5.11 boot offer is still going strong. If you haven't taken advantage of the FREE pant and socks offer with every 5.11 boot purchase, take the time now to place your order! This promotion is ending soon, and we want to help as many of our customers stretch their dollar as possible. See the sidebar for details or just give me a call! I'm always here to answer your questions and help in any way.

Dept. of Homeland SecurityNew President, New Agenda

With the swearing in of President Barack Obama and a new Secretary of Homeland Security to match, we're seeing the first transition of the young government agency to a new administration. Some of the key points of the Obama administration's Department of Homeland Security agenda include strengthening information networks and protecting against bioterrorism threats. Just how these points will be implemented has yet to be seen, and it will likely be some time before our readers see any change in policy for their day-to-day security activities. But the new White House agenda is worth reading, and it's worth comparing to your company's operations to see how you can be a part of this change in management.

East Baton Rouge Parish SheriffLouisiana Deputies Learn Spanish to Aid Communication

In an effort to improve officer outreach and speed communication with all citizens, deputies in the East Baton Rouge sheriff's department have begun taking two-week crash courses in Spanish. The course is not meant to be comprehensive by any stretch of the imagination, but it does equip officers with some of the most important and often used words in their line of service. The course covers orders given to criminals as well as basics to communicate during times of emergency or disaster until an interpreter can arrive on the scene with better Spanish skills.

This is an interesting and growing trend in the security and law enforcement industry. Though officers cannot learn all the languages present in their area, many are learning key words and terms in the most common languages. But it is also controversial, as the officers are being required to give commands in a foreign language, which opens the door to mistakes and misstatements.

NOTE: We'd like to hear your input: do you have bi-lingual officers, or do you serve in an area where a second language is required for your work? Email our newsletter editor and let us know.

San Leandro PoliceMore Officers Getting Paid for Time Spent Dressing

Police officers in San Leandro, California, have won a settlement in their lawsuit seeking compensation for time spent dressing and undressing in uniforms required for their positions. The settlement, set at $460,000, is far from the $1.5 million the officers' association was seeking but helps the city meet the officers' request without costing the full amount sought or the soaring legal fees.

Business management tip

Sell 'Em on White Collar Security Too

It's not just physical security that you can sell to your clients. There is also the potential to sell financial, white collar security measures as well. A study on white collar embezzlement cases from 2008 was performed by Marquet International and shows that the median loss was $500,000. And while women were more likely to be the perpetrators (at 60 percent), it was the men who actually accounted for 75 percent of the financial losses. Most notably, about half of the crimes were committed by employees who held finance and accounting positions.

What does this mean to you and your security company? Armed with these facts, you can approach your current and potential customers and offer a new series of security measures meant to protect their business from such losses. Offering employee background checks, financial audits and annual staff interviews, you can provide another layer of protection against embezzlement and employee theft. Security companies already must perform background checks on their own employees and know the procedures and red flags. This is an easy additional service that you likely already have experience with.

Adding financial audits and investigations may be a more difficult task. You may need to seek out specially qualified staff who are trained to find suspicious financial dealings and trace their sources. By adding one or two specialty officers, you may be positioned to grow your business into a new branch of security and offer a more rounded package of services to your customers.
